Cal Ripken state tournament | Manatee 9-U team opens with two victories

The host Manatee 9-U All-Stars were off and running Thursday as the Cal Ripken state tournament for the Southern Region got underway at Heritage Harbour.

Manatee defeated Oviedo 7-4 in the morning and downed Fort Lauderdale 13-5 in the afternoon to advance to the winner's bracket semifinals. The local squad will face Okeeheelee at 11:30 a.m. Friday.

Manatee's 11-U team was not so fortunate. It dropped a 6-3 decision to Treasure Coast and will meet Ocala at 11 a.m. Friday in a loser's bracket game.

The 16-team tournament will continue through Sunday or Monday at Heritage Harbour.
