"Mamma Mia!" is one of the most popular musicals of the 21st century. Probably no one who's ever seen it will say the plot is its strong point.
The show's popular because it's packed with great Abba songs. The silly story line, about a single mother whose daughter arranges a reunion with three former boyfriends, is a liability.
So the Players Theatre in Sarasota is offering a show full of Abba songs, unencumbered by a romcom plot.
"Knowing Me, Knowing You: The Hits of ABBA" is a new musical revue created by Jeffery and Berry Ayers Kin (the artistic director and music director, respectively, of the Players Theatre).
It's pretty much all music and dancing. Kin and Ayers have created informational "pop-ups" -- kind of like you'd see on VH1's "Pop-Up Video" -- that enhance the songs with bits of information about the band and its music.
The songs span Abba's phenomenal career and include "Chiquitita," "Winner Takes It All," "Honey, Honey" and "Dancing Queen."
It's directed and choreographed by Michelle Teyke, who was also the director/choreographer for "More Than A Feeling," "Nunsense" and "Taffetas" at the Players Theatre.
