Twins place Mauer on DL

The Sports NetworkJuly 2, 2014

Minneapolis, MN (SportsNetwork.com) - Minnesota Twins first baseman Joe Mauer has been placed on the 15-day disabled list with a strained right oblique.

Mauer extended his season-high hit streak to 12 games with a double in the fourth inning of Tuesday's win against Kansas City but limped into second base and left the game one inning later.

The former AL MVP is batting .271 with two homers and 28 RBI for the Twins this season while playing exclusively at first base for the first time in his career. Mauer won three Gold Gloves as a catcher before making the move to first in an effort to help prolong his career.

In a corresponding move, Minnesota recalled first baseman/outfielder Chris Colabello from Triple-A Rochester. Colabello hit .232 with four home runs and 30 RBI in 40 games with the Twins earlier this season.
