Police: Florida patient strangled another at hospital

June 30, 2014

AVENTURA — Police say a Florida man died in his hospital room after being strangled by another patient.

Relatives say Raul Alexander Rios was admitted to Aventura Hospital two weeks ago for depression.

Police say Rios died Thursday after being strangled by Alexander Thadeus Jackson, who had been assigned to the same room.

Jackson was being held Monday without bond at the Miami-Dade County jail on a charge of first-degree murder. Jail records did not show whether he had an attorney. It wasn’t clear why he had been admitted to the hospital.

Hospital spokeswoman Kathryn Walton tells The Miami Herald (http://hrld.us/V4QZrl) that the hospital is assisting investigators and conducting an internal review. According to a police report, Jackson told investigators that he strangled Rios with his hands and a bedsheet.
