A big win for Blake Medical Center's trauma center - and local patients

Blake Medical Center's trauma center remains on life support thanks to an administrative court judge's ruling last week that confirmed its establishment is valid.

Hopefully, that will end the legal battle being waged by Tampa and St. Petersburg hospitals with trauma centers fighting to shut down Blake's unit.

The issue is revenue, not lives -- a sad indictment on both the high cost of emergency medical care and the cutthroat competition among hospitals with trauma centers.

Blake's center, which opened in late 2011, has already treated more than 2,100 patients from its expansive service area -- Manatee, Sarasota and DeSoto counties.

Quicker access to a hospital with a trauma unit saves lives, and Blake's center provides that to thousands of people.

We hope this new judicial ruling ends the long and expensive legal battle.
