MANATEE -- A 50-year-old man has been charged with lying to authorities after he falsely reported that he had seen a child grabbed off a bicycle and placed in a van, according to the Manatee County Sheriff's Office.

David L. Walker on Tuesday afternoon called 9-1-1 to report the incident, according to the sheriff's office. The sheriff's office originally said the call was made anonymously.

Responding deputies found a bicycle on the side of State Road 70 East, but they did not find a van nor did the sheriff's office receive any reports of a missing child.

The incident allegedly happened on State Road 70 East near 39th Street East, according to the sheriff's office.

The news release did not say how investigators identified Walker as a suspect. Walker's possible motive for making the call was "unclear," the report states.

Walker faces a charge of providing false information to law enforcement.

Booking information for Walker was not available on the Manatee County jail website.
