BRADENTON — A Bradenton man was charged with battery on an officer after he tried to hug a deputy, according to the Manatee County Sheriff’s Office.

Ricky Cheney, 35, was arrested at 1:58 a.m. Tuesday. According to a report, a deputy was investigating a disturbance involving Cheney at an apartment on 14th Street West, Bradenton.

After it was determined no crime had been committed, he asked Cheney to leave.

While the deputy was driving Cheney home, he said Cheney tried to hug him.

“I stuck out my left arm and held the offender off, and told him ‘Stop trying to hug me,’” the deputy reported.

Cheney reportedly tried hugging the deputy two more times before grabbing the deputy’s left arm with his right before pulling him in. The deputy was able to break free and Cheney was arrested without incident.

Cheney was booked in jail and was being held without bond.
