Deputy Young honored by Manatee County in June for DUI stop

June 24, 2014

MANATEE — Deputy Phillip Young was named Deputy of the Month for June by the Manatee County Sheriff’s Office.

Young was traveling June 6 on Interstate 75 near Riverview when he came upon a vehicle moving erratically. He watched to determine whether the driver was under the influence of suffering a medical crisis.

Young called 911 to report the situation and remained in visual contact to keep 911 informed. He followed the vehicle to Lakeland before 911 could get law enforcement in the area.

Young turned on his flashers so Hillsborough Sheriff’s Office could stop the vehicle and was later informed the driver was intoxicated.

“He could have ignored the situation and continued on his way home, but chose to act beyond expectations for the benefit of public safety,” said Sheriff Brad Steube in a press release.
