Cheers to Manatee County for new bus route to airport

June 21, 2014

Hooray for Manatee County Area Transit, and its riders. We will now have long overdue access to our airport.

I fly frequently and it costs me $40 each way in cab fare to get to the airport from Bradenton. I've just been giving the money to my retired neighbor to drive me to Tampa.

I figured he needed the money more than the cab company, and I get cheaper fares through there, anyway. Maybe now I'll consider using the airport in my own hometown, again.

I do have to agree with many of the other comments received during the MCAT survey, though. I don't understand how a city of this size that depends so much on tourism and, consequently, the service and retail industries, can't provide later services and Sunday service as well.

How can a waitperson make a decent night's tips when they have to be done by 6:30 p.m.? And do all second- or third-shift workers catch the bus four to five hours early in order to get shift premiums? Even if some of the major routes ran later, it would be an improvement.

The day after the rate increase was reported in the MCAT fares, the Herald also ran yet another article about the "parking woes" on the island (June 19, 1B). Maybe tourists and locals alike would be able to patronize the bars and restaurants on the island later than 7 p.m. on a Saturday night, or at all on a Sunday.

I, for one, would like to get to the Coquina Beach market or go for brunch. Wouldn't better service solve some of this issue? Hmm, food for thought.
