MTI's 50th graduation set June 29

MTI's 50th features 1,400 grads

BRADENTON -- The 50th graduation of Manatee Technical Institute will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, June 29, at the Bradenton Area Convention Center, One Haben Blvd., Palmetto.

The class of 2014 has 1,400 graduates compared with 78 for the class of 1964.

The tech center started its mission 50 years ago with five programs. MTI offers more than 50 programs today.

Graduation speakers are students, including one from the Main Campus, one from East Campus and one from Adult Education.

FWC combats lionfish invasion with changes

FORT MYERS -- The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission made several changes Wednesday to combat the lionfish invasion in Florida waters. Approved changes go into effect Aug. 1 and include:

• Prohibiting importation of live lionfish

• Allowing harvest of lionfish when diving with a rebreather

• Allowing participants in approved tournaments and other organized events to spear lionfish or other invasive species in areas where spearfishing is normally not allowed.
