Faces in business: Jeff Chapin

June 18, 2014

Title: Vice President Commercial Lender

Company: Insignia Bank

What was the best business advice you ever received?

To never over-promise what you can do for a client or a potential client. To convey to them what you feel can be done rather than what they want to hear. Informing them up front what you think you can do goes a long way.

If you could choose another profession, what would it be?

I'd like to be a small-business owner. I do not know what it would be, but the day-to-day running of all aspects of a company are attractive to me.

What's the biggest risk you have taken in your career?

As a banker, we're all conservative and I have not taken any major risk. However, a few years into banking, I chose to leave our main office to start consumer lending at a branch we were opening from scratch. It ultimately worked out well and it landed me at commercial lending, which is what I wanted to do.

If you could travel anywhere in the world, where would you start?

A tour of Europe visiting Paris, Rome and all the other major cities.
