Cards' Wainwright to miss next start

The Sports NetworkJune 14, 2014

St. Louis, MO (SportsNetwork.com) - St. Louis Cardinals ace Adam Wainwright will not make his scheduled start Monday against the New York Mets in order to rest his ailing elbow.

Wainwright underwent an MRI Wednesday in St. Petersburg, Fla., one day after he tossed seven shutout innings to defeat the Tampa Bay Rays, after complaining of soreness in the elbow. The tests revealed tendinitis but no structural damage, with the All-Star right-hander prescribed an anti- inflammatory shot to help relieve the discomfort.

The Cardinals have labeled Wainwright's removal from Monday's outing as precautionary and expect him to start next Saturday against Philadelphia.

The runner-up for the 2013 National League Cy Young Award, Wainwright has gotten this season off to an excellent beginning as well. Through 14 starts, the 32-year-old has compiled a 9-3 record with a 2.15 earned run average.
