BRADENTON -- A gas station that saved a Bradenton church from closing is now hiring and will open next month.

Thorntons, based in Clarksville, Ind., is accepting applications for 15 available positions and is set to open July 10 at 4850 State Road 64 E., said Erin Jones, spokeswoman for Thorntons.

Bradenton City Council approved plans for the gas station in May 2013, which paved the way for the company to pay $750,000 to the struggling Faith United Church of Christ for nearly two acres.

Church officials had said they were struggling to pay a $4,000 monthly mortgage and the sale would enable it to free itself of debt and avoid relocation.

The 24-hour gas station will feature 20 pumps, a 4,400-square-foot convenience store and a buffer of fence and trees between the Braden River Lakes neighborhood.

Thorntons, primarily in the Midwest, started its Florida expansion in 2012 after opening in Clearwater.

Its Bradenton store is part of a strategy to add 20 locations across Tampa Bay, according to the company.

The stretch of State Route 64 is becoming competitive for gas stations as Wawa has plans to build a store at the former Eckerd.

A Mobil gas station across from Thorntons recently reopened.
