BOYS WEIGHTLIFTING Gage Takacs, sr., Southeast

Weight class: 219

To his credit: Takacs ended his prep career with a flourish by winning his second consecutive Class 1A state weightlifting title. His total lift of 705 pounds was 10 pounds better than runner-up Steven Knowles out of Inverness Citrus, and Takacs' bench was 405 pounds. Takacs won the state title at 199 pounds last season.

Fast fact: Takacs basically won his second straight title on one leg after he suffered a knee injury in February that put a premature end to his wrestling season.

Up next: Takacs hopes to lift in college but he will attend State College of Florida for a year to give his so he can give his surgically-repaired knee time to heal.

CARDINAL MOONEY -- Tyler Garris, jr., 169 pounds

MANATEE -- Dylan Beauchamp, sr., heavyweight; Darian Oliver, jr., 119.

SOUTHEAST -- Greg Brevil, sr., 219 pounds.

BOYS TENNIS Zach Bessette, jr., Saint Stephen's

To his credit: Bessette was the No. 1 player for the Falcons, who qualified for the Class 1A state meet as a team. Despite losing in the quarterfinals at the state tournament, Bessette excelled at leading a young team into that event while partnering with Brian Berdusco for a berth in the team doubles final. Bessette and Berdusco won the district No. 1 doubles title, and Bessette won both region singles matches for the Falcons en route to the state tourney appearance.

Fast fact: His favorite food is steak.

Up next: Bessette is taking the summer to fine-tune his game in tournaments, while visiting colleges to decide where he'll go after his senior year next season.

SAINT STEPHEN'S -- Brian Berdusco, fr.; Russell Berdusco, 7th; Graham Conron, 8th; Jean-Pierre Descheneaux, jr.

SOUTHEAST -- Jake Mattraw, jr.

GIRLS TENNIS Maria Ross, fr., Out-of-Door Academy

To her credit: Ross was never beaten in singles competition this season, capturing the Class 1A individual singles title and the overall singles championship. However, Ross said her overall doubles title with Mary Ann Rompf is her favorite tennis moment.

Fast fact: Her favorite school subject is math.

Up next: Ross plans to play in several tournaments over the summer to prime her game for next season.
