BRADENTON -- Barbara Harvey will not seek re-election to the Manatee County School Board in the fall, she announced during a board meeting Tuesday.

"I'm going to spend more time with my family," she said.

Harvey, a Palmetto resident and former principal, has served on the board 16 years.

She predicted she will be busier after she leaves the school board. She continues to serve as executive director for the Educational Consultants Consortium in Palmetto and said she hopes to increase the number of students who use the services from 125 now to as many as 400.

Harvey holds the District 2 seat, which covers the urban core of Bradenton and Palmetto. Rodney Jones and Charlie Kennedy have already announced candidacies for the seat.

Two other school board seats are also up for election, including the District 5 seat held by board Chairwoman Julie Aranibar and the District 4 seat held by Karen Carpenter.

Aranibar will face Carlon "Les" Nichols and Mary Cantrell in the primary. Carpenter will face Frank Brunner.

The qualifying period for the school board race is June 16-20.

The primary election is Aug. 26, and if a runoff is needed, it would be held Nov. 4.
