UNIVERSITY PARK -- The public can share feedback and hear more information about a planned interchange improvement project at Interstate 75 and University Parkway when the Florida Department of Transportation holds a public meeting from 4:30-7 p.m. Thursday, June 26, at Holiday Inn Lakewood Ranch, 6231 Lake Osprey Drive, in the Osprey Room.
The project will create Florida's first diverging diamond intersection where traffic is expected to increase with the addition of the Nathan Benderson Park rowing facility and the Mall at University Town Center nearby.
The $60 million project is not yet funded in FDOT's five-year work plan, but state officials and local lawmakers have expressed confidence they will find the funding. When finished, about 3.5 miles of I-75, from north of Fruitville Road to north of University Park, will be widened to an eight-lane highway. Additionally, about 1 mile of University Parkway will be widened from the Cattlemen Road/Cooper Creek Boulevard intersection to the Market Street/Lake Osprey Drive intersection. The construction starting date has not been determined.
