Bradenton man, 22, shot to death in apparent accident, sheriff says

MANATEE -- A 22-year-old man was shot to death in what authorities say appears to have been an accidental shooting in his Bradenton apartment.

Austin W. Brunson died shortly after 8:30 p.m. Saturday when a gun his roommate was carrying fired, striking Brunson in the head, according to a Manatee County Sheriff's Office news release.

The shooting happened in their apartment in the 2700 block of 50th Avenue West.

Brunson and Kyle A. Guessford, 22, were roommates and were in their residence along with two visitors at the time of the shooting, the report states.

Guessford was in his room, checking out several accessories he had just purchased for his pistol, according to the report.

Guessford left his room with the gun in his hand.

As Guessford entered the living room, he switched the weapon-mounted flashlight on and the firearm discharged, the report states.

Brunson was pronounced dead upon the arrival of paramedics, according to the report.

There was no fighting or arguing prior to the shooting, which appears to be accidental, the report states.

The investigation will continue, the report concludes.
