Manatee Technical Institute director Mary Cantrell challenging Julie Aranibar for school board seat

Mary S. Cantrell, the outgoing director of Manatee Technical Institute, has filed to run for election to the Manatee School Board, according to the county elections office.

Cantrell is challenging incumbent board member Julie Aranibar for the District 5 seat on the board. Also running for the position is Carlton "Les" Nichols.

A notable change coming to Manatee Technical Institute is the departure of director Mary Cantrell, whose contract was not renewed.

Cantrell, who has been at MTI for 18 years, led the campus move from Bradenton to East Manatee off Caruso Road. In April, she learned that her contract would not be renewed.

Cantrell had told the Bradenton Herald she hoped to find work at another technology center.

"I like to fix things and make them better," she said.

Cantrell retired in 2004, but returned to the helm of MTI under the Deferred Retirement Option Program.

MTI opened the Caruso Road campus Jan. 7, 2013, the 50th anniversary of the school.

The qualifying period for the school board election is June 16-20. The primary election is Aug. 26, and a runoff, if needed, would be Nov. 4.
