If you're a fan of comedy, or if you just keep up with what's going on around town, you know that McCurdy's Comedy Theatre had been planning a move to a new location.

The day is finally at hand. McCurdy's has moved into its roomier new digs at 1923 Ringling Blvd., Sarasota, in downtown.

The official opening happens on Wednesday with an appearance by Louis Johnson Jr.

Johnson has been one of the favorite comics among McCurdy's audiences for more than 20 years. He was voted Showtime's Funniest Person in America (he had his own Showtime special) and he's appeared on Comedy Central, A&E and BET. He'll be at the new McCurdy's through June 15.

On Monday, McCurdy's is hosting a "Pre-Grand-Opening Charity Fundraiser." Tickets are $50 and the entertainment comes from area musicians and Sarasota's Black Diamond Burlesque. The money goes to the American Cancer Society.

McCurdy's had been in its previous location on Tamiami Trail for 14 years. The new location measures 7,100 square feet, about a third larger than the previous club, and has ample parking in three garages within a few blocks.

"This will be our fourth location and God wiling our last," owner Les McCurdy said. "It's got everything we want. The performing area will be the same size, but the kitchen will be bigger so we can offer an expanded menu."

Details: June 11-15, McCurdy's Comedy Theatre, 1923 Ringling Blvd., Sarasota. Show times: 7 p.m. Wednesday, Thursday and Sunday, 7 and 9:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday. Tickets: $12-$15. Information: 941-925-2869, mccurdyscomedy.com.
