Manatee Schools lay off 12 support staff

BRADENTON ­-- A dozen Manatee School support staff employees were laid off Monday, according to the district.

The 12 employees come from the human resources, transportation, information technology and budget departments, said Don Hall, the deputy superintendent for operations with the district.

The layoffs were not because of poor performance, but because of the specific skill sets the district is looking for, Hall said.

"Some support staffing changes are being implemented at the School District of Manatee County due to reorganizational re-alignment," Hall said in an emailed statement.

The 12 employees laid off on Monday would be the only support staff employees to be laid off this year, Hall said.

"Last year, there were significantly more," he said.

The district laid off 69 support staff employees last year, Hall said.

On Monday afternoon, Hall would not provide a list of names of employees, since not every employee had been notified.

The employees, who Hall said have access to sensitive student data and information, were released immediately and sent home for the rest of the day.

The employees will have to call their supervisors to arrange a time to pick up their belongings, Hall said. No armed guards were used to escort the employees out of the building, but many employees were walked out by their supervisors, Hall said.

The 12 employees will work with human resources to find another suitable position in or out of the school district, Hall said.

Hall emphasized Monday that the employees were valued and respected employees of the school district and were not let go because of poor performance.

"It's not about performance," he said. "The skill set didn't fit what we needed."
