ST. PETERSBURG -- A St. Petersburg man deputies say called 911 early Monday after stabbing his grandmother several times has been charged with attempted first-degree murder.

According to the Pinellas County Sheriff's Office, 23-year-old Joseph Richard Levan called 911 just after midnight and said he had stabbed 70-year-old Eula Powless in the home they share on the 2500 block of 50th Avenue N.

Deputies found Powless in the home with multiple stab wounds to her upper torso and neck area. She was transported to a local hospital, where she is in stable condition, the sheriff's office said.

Detectives said Levan admitted that he had been planning the attack for several days. He was arrested and booked in the Pinellas County Jail.
