Venice woman killed in Saturday house fire

VENICE — An 84-year-old woman died in a fire in Venice in Sarasota County at 12:13 a.m. Saturday.

Sarasota County Sheriff’s Office deputies went to Moss Lane in Venice and met an adult male outside of a home, according to a sheriff’s office report. The man told deputies awoke to the smell of smoke, noticed the house was filled with smoke and was on fire.

He reported he tried but was unable to rescue the woman resident, later identified as Rushie Friend. Deputies were unable to save Friend, the report states.

An initial investigation indicates the fire started in the bedroom.
