Baby gator delights, mystifies Bradenton family

May 28, 2014

BRADENTON -- Kay Smith of Bradenton was picking up oak tree branches with her son, Chandler Smith, in preparation Wednesday to mow the lawn.

The son walked to the front of the house and Kay Smith heard him say: "Mom! There's a gator in our yard!"

Kay Smith said she laughed because she knew he didn't want to mow the lawn and she assumed he was joking."

"Then I saw him step back a few feet and I knew it really was something," Kay Smith said. "What a surprise!

A baby alligator was just laying in the front yard with no water anywhere close by.

The Smiths searched for more babies or the mother because he was grunting for mama gator when they caught him. The baby gatpr was picked up by a Florida Wildlife Commission officer.

The mother was not seen.
