BRADENTON -- City officials expressed displeasure over the decision of the Florida Highway Patrol to conduct a driver's license checkpoint on the Palma Sola Causeway over the Memorial Day holiday weekend.

Vice Mayor Bemis Smith blasted the FHP during Wednesday's Bradenton City Council meeting for causing a massive traffic delay from the causeway eastward on Manatee Avenue that left motorists stuck in traffic for as long as 45 minutes.

“I would encourage them to use common sense when blocking off roads in the city,” said Smith.

Bradenton Police Chief Mike Radzilowski confirmed traffic was stacked up all the way to 34th Avenue West.

“They come out every year and create a nightmare,” said Radzilowski, pledging to reach out to FHP to consider better timing for checkpoints moving forward.
