CLEARWATER BEACH -- Two people were shot and eight were taken into custody after a chaotic series of shootings that rattled Memorial Day beachgoers Monday evening on Clearwater Beach.

Hours after the shooting, Clearwater officials were still trying to unravel what happened and determine whether anyone involved was still at large. The inbound lanes of the two bridges to Clearwater Beach were kept closed to all but local residents until about 10 p.m.

According to Clearwater police, the incident began around 6:45 p.m. as a fight outside the parking garage of the Hyatt Regency Resort and Spa and moved to Pier 60 and another location.

At least one of the two people who were shot has been transported to a local hospital. The condition of the shooting victims was not immediately known.

Police took two people into custody, but a third person fled the scene. Police are searching the beach area and checking vehicles leaving the beach for that person.

The two bridges to Clearwater Beach - Clearwater Memorial Causeway and the Sand Key Bridge - have been closed to inbound traffic, except for those with proof of Clearwater Beach residency. Traffic is being allowed to leave the beach. The Hyatt is located in the heart of Clearwater Beach, at 301 S Gulfview Blvd.
