Man killed after crashing into oncoming car in Parrish

— A motorist was killed when he crashed into an oncoming car while trying to pass traffic on County Road 39 early Saturday, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

Jose N. Herrera, 29, of Wimauma, was heading southbound on County Road 39, north of State Road 62, at 6:58 a.m., an FHP report states.

Herrera drove his 1999 Audi A6 into the northbound lane in an effort to pass traffic but was in the path of a 2002 Ford Expedition headed the opposite direction, according to the report.

Herrera steered to the right in an an effort to evade the oncoming car, which was also braking and swerving to the left, investigators said. The Audi struck the left front of the Expedition, and Herrera suffered fatal injuries.

The driver of the Ford, 22-year-old Darrell W. Catrett Jr., of Lithia, was seriously injured and taken to Lakeland Regional Medical Center.

It was not known if Herrera was wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash or if alcohol was a factor, the report indicates.

Catrett was wearing a seat belt, investigators said.
