EAST MANATEE -- An accident involving a school bus occurred near Freedom Elementary School Friday morning, according to the Emergency Communications Center.

School bus driver Mark Dawsey, who has been driving buses for six years, was taking a left into the school when the bus scraped against the car of Sharon Jefferson, a mother taking her children to school. There were about 50 children on the bus, according to Florida Highway Patrol.

Jefferson was stopped at a stop sign and Dawsey was going slowly, so damage was minor and there were no injuries. FHP cars, an ambulance and a fire truck were seen heading to the area, which troopers said is customary when reported accidents involve a school bus with children on it.

Manatee Schools spokesman Steve Valley said the bus belongs to the 13 AV Dream Center, not the school district.

FHP said the crash, at State Road 64 and School House Drive, was reported at 8:34 a.m. School House Drive is the entrance road that takes motorists to Haile Middle School and the adjacent Freedom Elementary School.

FHP said there was roadblock in the area.
