Nats' Gonzalez placed on disabled list

Washington, DC ( - The Washington Nationals have placed starting pitcher Gio Gonzalez on the 15-day disabled list with left shoulder inflammation.

The move comes after two uncharacteristic starts for the Washington southpaw, who was charged with the loss on Saturday against the Mets after allowing five runs on seven hits in three innings pitched.

Gonzalez, who spent the first four years of his career in Oakland, was roughed up by the A's in his previous outing, surrendering a season-high seven runs on nine hits in 4 1/3 innings.

The left-hander is 3-4 on the season with a 4.62 ERA and 53 strikeouts in 50 2/3 innings. Ryan Mattheus has been recalled from Triple-A Syracuse to take Gonzalez's spot on the active roster.
