— A Fort Myers man was killed when his van drifted off the road and crashed into a utility pole Saturday morning on U.S. 41 in Sarasota, the Florida Highway Patrol reports.

The crash happened around 10:15 a.m. on U.S. 41 at McIntosh Road, according to the report.

The driver of a 2013 Ford van was headed northbound on 41 in the right lane when the vehicle drifted off the shoulder, striking a utility pole.

The 51-year-old driver, Joseph Nauman, was pronounced dead at the scene.

The utility pole snapped during the accident, dropping cable/electric/phone lines on a Buick Regal that was stopped at a red light on McIntosh, the report states. The driver of that car, a 51-year-old Sarasota man, was not injured, according to the highway patrol.

McIntosh Road and the right turn lane of northbound U.S. 41 were closed for several hours while utility crews replaced the poles and wires.
