GENERAL

State College of Florida seeking submissions: The State College of Florida, Manatee-Sarasota Fine Art Gallery and Theatre Program are seeking submissions for an upcoming art exhibit, "Art of the Wedding Costume: Ritual and Romance," which will be on display in the Fine Art Gallery Sept. 19-Dec. 3. A retrospective look at wedding costumes through the decades, the exhibit will include a display of men's and women's traditional, nontraditional and cultural wedding attire from the 19th, 20th, and 21st centuries. Those who are interested in submitting distinctive and iconic-style wedding apparel and unique accessories such as veils, fans, hats, gloves, shoes and other accoutrements for the exhibit may upload high-resolution digital photos of the items and complete and electronic form at scf.edu/WeddingSubmission. Participants also may submit print copies of original photos to the attention of the Wedding Costume Committee at State College of Florida, Manatee-Sarasota, Fine Art Gallery, 5840 26th St. W., Bradenton. Participant must provide their contact information, including a mailing address, phone number and email address, and details such as the date of the wedding, who was wearing the gown or accessories, and the approximate value of each item. Deadline for submissions is May 30. Participants will be notified by June 15 if their submissions have been selected and will be required to deliver wedding items to SCF Fine Art Gallery by Aug. 20. Auditions: The Manatee Players will hold auditions for the first three shows of the 2014-15 season, including Disney's "Tarzan," performances Aug. 7-24, "Dames at Sea," performances Sept. 11-28, and "Morning's at Seven," performances Sept. 18-Oct. 5. Auditions are all at 7 p.m. and will be held at 502 Third Ave. W., Bradenton. Those auditioning should dress appropriately for dance auditions and have a song in their key prepared. BOOK NEWS

Book signing and reading: Local author, Ann Stephanian Kale, will be guest author at the Braden River Library, 4915 53rd Ave. E., Bradenton, 11 a.m.-noon May 31, June 21 and July 26. She will be accompanied by her therapy dog, Max, so that he may listen to the children read. Kale will have her five books "Marco and Princess Gina," "Artie - the Ugly Frog," " Going to College with Grandma," "When I grow Up," "Regis the Wonder Dog," available for purchasing and autographing. Books are $10 each. All proceeds from the sales of her books will benefit children's charities. Information: 941-727-6079.

DATED CLASSES

Dance classes: Registration is open for dance classes at Deborah Vinton Dance, 1370-D Blvd. of the Arts, Sarasota. Classes for teens, adults and seniors include classical cecchetti ballet, pointe, modern, jazz, performing group, and an injury prevention and actionomics class. Classes for children are super heroes, creative movement, pre-ballet, tap, ballet and contemporary. All classes are for beginners through advanced and will be held through May 22. Performing art classes and camps: The Performing Arts Conservatory at Manatee Performing Arts Center announces the following classes and camps through May 31 at 502 Third Ave. W., Bradenton: audition technique, the singing actor, prince and princess, triple threat 101, beginner-advanced ballet, youth tap and youth ballet, beginning-intermediate tap, social and line dancing for adults, intermediate-advanced jazz, and mechanics of vocal technique. A free "Dramature" class is offered for actors 55 an older and the following camps will be offered: "Let's Put On A Show," "Kids Camp" and "Broadway Boot Camp." Lifelong Learning Academy Classes: Registration for the Lifelong Learning Academy Summer 2014 Semester offers 36 courses June 2-July 24 in a variety of subjects, including literature, the arts, history, current affairs, science, psychology, health and wellbeing, technology, and languages. Courses are primarily offered on the campus of the University of Florida Sarasota-Manatee, and some are offered at Kobernich-Anchin-Benderson in Sarasota and at Westminster Towers and Shores in Bradenton. Counted cross stitching: A stitch-in is held May 17 and every first and third Saturday of the month at Cross Stitch Magic, 1222 12th St. W., Bradenton. The meetings are for counted cross stitchers to compare notes and projects. Information: 941-746-4163.

Project Appleseed Rifle Marksmanship Clinic: The Revolutionary War Veterans Association offer the Project Appleseed rifle marksmanship clinic 8:30 a.m.-5 p.m. May 17-18, with registration starting at 8 a.m., at the Manatee Gun and Archery Club, 1805 Logue Road, Myakka City. Participants are taught fundamental rifle marksmanship, safe gun handling, proper use of a rifle sling, and Revolutionary War history. Clinic fees: adults $40 one day, $60 both days; youth ages 18 and younger $15 one day, $20 both days; free to active duty military, law enforcement officers with ID, and elected officials. Dance classes: Fuzion Dance Artists offer the following classes and workshops through Summer 2014:

Citizenship classes: Goldman and Loughlin, a law firm with experience in immigration issues, is offering free citizenship classes 5-6 p.m. June 2 and every first Monday of the month at the Ivey Professional Building, 435 12th St. W., Bradenton. Classes are designed to help those seeking to become U.S. residents. Topics will include eligibility for citizenship, "good moral character" issues, and civics. In particular, the interview process and 100 questions comprising the test will be reviewed. Participants may attend more than one meeting, and meetings are open to everyone. Boating classes: The United States Coast Guard Auxiliary Flotillas 81 and 85 are offering Boating Safety Courses 8 a.m.-12:30 p.m. June 14 and 21, and July 12 and 19. Cost per class is $40 a person, or $60 per couple sharing a book. Learn about different kinds of boats, boating laws, safety equipment, navigation, trailering, storing, boating emergencies, and safety issues. The course prepares attendees for the Florida Safe Boater's Card, which entitles recipients to discounts on boating insurance. Boat operators born after Jan. 1, 1988 are required to have the Safe Boater Card in order to operate a motorboat with 10 horsepower or more. AARP Driver safety classes: Driver Safety Classes for Manatee County are held monthly at various locations including the public libraries. This is a state-approved safety class and the certificate you receive is good for three years with your insurance company. The class is open to anyone age 50 and older. Anna Maria Island Community Center: The Anna Maria Island Community Centers offers the following classes, starting in January, at 407 Magnolia Ave., Anna Maria: dance, surfset fitness, bridge, watercolor, tennis for youth, and multi media art classes. Art Classes for children and adults: The Manatee Children's Services will offer children's art classes 10 a.m.-noon Saturdays and 5-7 p.m. Thursdays, an adults and children class 12:30-2:30 p.m. Saturdays, and adult classes 10 a.m.-noon Wednesdays-Thursdays, a Paint and Wine adults class 6-8 p.m. Fridays. The Thursday adult class is bilingual. Students for the Friday Paint and Wine class may bring their own wine. Classes are $15-$25, and $40 for the Paint and Wine class, which includes canvas and paint. Students will master pencil, charcoal, pastels, watercolors, acrylic paint and more and classes will be conducted by Amalia Flores. All proceeds will benefit Manatee Children's Services. Dancing Through the Years Adult Ballet Classes: Adult ballet classes, all levels, including pointe, will be held Saturdays and Mondays, at Bradenton Dance & Performing Arts Center, 2726 Sixth Ave. W., Bradenton, and Fridays and Wednesdays at 407 Magnolia Ave., Anna Maria Island. Classes are $10-$12. All classes at both locations are accepting beginning level students for both the Ballet Booth Camp class and Bare Bones class, now. Age range is 18-65. G.T. Bray Recreation Center: G.T. Bray Recreation Center offers the following classes at 5502 33rd Ave. Drive W., Bradenton: Yoga, Yoga-lates for women, and Yoga for Tennis, Pilates, Butts N' Guts, Spin, Boot Camp, Recess, Water Aerobics, Body Sculpt and Sculpt and Burn, Strength and Length, Zumba, Ballroom Dance, and Tennis Stretch.
