There's been no shortage of great music festivals in this part of Florida in recent weeks, but it's safe to say that this weekend's 97X BBQ offers the most music for the money.
That's because, as any local lover of current music probably knows, the annual 97X BBQ (which used to be called the 97X Backyard BBQ) is free.
But the lineup for this year's event in St. Peterburg's Vinoy Park is pretty impressive, and worth paying for if you had to. Bastille, the British rock group who scored a major international hit with "Pompeii," headlines.
There are some other bands that are more than worthwhile, including the 1975, a British group that's had hits with "Sex" and "Chocolate." The 1975 played a memorable set at the State Theatre in St. Petersburg a year ago.
Also on tap for Saturday's show: Sleeper Agent, Skaters, Bad Suns, Sir Sly, Kongos, Orwell and Wild Club.
It's all free, but there's a catch: You need to get tickets in advance, and you need to get them from one of the 97X ticket drop locations. There are lots of them, and they're listed on the station's website, but they're all in Pinellas and Hillsborough counties.
That's kind of a hassle for people who live in Manatee or Sarasota, but this year for the first time there's a way around it: You can buy tickets for $20 through Ticketmaster.
Details: 11 a.m. May 17, Vinoy Park, 501 Fifth Ave. NE, St. Petersburg. Tickets: Free. Information: 727-217-9797, 97xonline.com.
