Palmetto carport roof blows off; no one hurt

May 14, 2014

PALMETTO — A carport roof was blown away Wednesday inside Jet Mobile Home Park in Palmetto, according to the Palmetto Police Department.

“It looked like a gust of wind caught it and bent it,” said Palmetto Police Deputy Chief Scott Tyler.

Tyler said there were no injuries at the home at 185 Jet Drive, which was unoccupied at the time.

PPD officers and North River Fire District officials were dispatched to the home just after 5 p.m., Tyler said.

“As far as I know, the mobile home is perfectly habitable,” he said.

Art Adler, a 77-year-old mobile home park resident, said he saw the aftermath of the incident, which took place at around 3:30 p.m. Part of the roof fell against a power pole right beside the mobile home.

“It was like a big sail waiting for a strong wind to blow it away and cause more damage,” Adler said. “I considered it a threatening situation because it was poised to cause even more damage.”
