Achre named 'Valiant Woman of Year'



LONGBOAT ISLAND -- Church Women United of Manatee County honored Judy Achre as Valiant Woman of the Year at Westminster Manor on May 2.

The award acknowledges outstanding work for the good of the community.

A member of Longboat Island Chapel, Achre has been a delegate to CWU for several years and conducted the Human Rights Celebration programs when the chapel played host to the organization earlier this year.

Achre is past president and vice president of the Longboat Island Chapel Board of Trustees. She has also served on the Chapel's Scholarship Committee and is co-chairwoman of the Outreach Committee.

Achre has worked in the Lord's Warehouse, chaired the Chapel Book Club and served on the Chapel Friends Committee.

She also served as greeter, usher and on the Fellowship Committee.

A few years ago she organized a tour of several facilities receiving chapel support: the Mount Carmel Resource Center program in Palmetto, the Russo Prison Ministry and the One Stop Center in Bradenton.

Achre was recently installed as president of the League of Women Voters in Sarasota. Her other local community involvements include: Mote Marine volunteer, reading tutor at the Alta Vista School, board member of the Public Interest Committee of LBK, volunteer at the Cyesis program for teen mothers at Riverview High School, a mentor to Students Taking Action Responsibly and a volunteer with the Literacy Buddy Project.
