Work session set for injection wells

MANATEE -- On Tuesday, Manatee County's commissioners will meet in a public work session concerning a controversial proposal to build a deep injection well for industrial wastewater.

The early-afternoon session begins at 1:30 p.m. in the Manatee Room on the fourth floor of the Manatee County Administration Complex at 1112 Manatee Ave. W.

The injection well system is to be built at the site of the former Piney Point Phosphates fertilizer production facility near Port Manatee. Commissioners previously discussed the injection well system in a work session in early 2013. That discussion covered both the deep injection well and two shallower wells the county plans to build at Port Manatee. Those shallower wells would pump up to 15 million gallons a day of treated wastewater into the ground. The deep injection well is being designed to pump 1 million to 2 million gallons of industrial wastewater to depths of up to 3,500 feet.

Manatee County has applied for permits to build the wells. The state Department of Environmental Protection issued draft permits for the wells earlier this year. A public comment period on the well runs until Friday.
