MANATEE — Brian Newberry, sports information/equipment manager with the State College of Florida, was found dead Thursday morning.

The Manatee County Sheriff’s Office found nothing suspicious in its death investigation, said spokesman Dave Bristow.

The 42-year-old Newberry was in his 17th year at State College of Florida after graduating from the school. He apparently had medical issues, Bristow said.

According to a profile on the SCF website, Newberry received his bachelor’s degree in physical education from the University of South Florida after graduating from SCF.

Newberry was clubhouse manager for the Chicago White Sox and performed administrative duties for the Sarasota White Sox of the Florida State League. He also worked for the Class AA Birmingham Barons during Michael Jordan’s tenure.

Newberry worked for the Bradenton Herald as a sports correspondent from 1994 to 2001.

SCF athletic director Matt Ennis was unavailable for comment Thursday night.

Former SCF baseball player Jeff Dally tweeted the following Thursday: “He loved Penn State, but even more he loved SCF Athletics. You will be missed! RIP Brian Newberry.”
