Manatee County's Take Stock in Children celebrates graduation

May 8, 2014

Take Stock in Children Manatee celebrated the graduation of 25 seniors on May 1, awarding approximately $400,000 in scholarships.

These students had applied for and been accepted as middle or high school students into this program. In these last few years, they have had the support of a mentor meeting once a week, achieved C or better grades and followed school rules.

One of these students was the first in her family to graduate high school. A family is changed forever.

One has had his father and grandfather in jail. He will break the cycle and attend college.

All of these students have made this journey toward a college education overcoming obstacles many of us can't imagine. All 25 students' stories inspire us.

But they made it. Over 140 students, family members, mentors, school faculty, and the Board and Leadership Council of Take Stock in Children and Superintendent Rick Mills honored the support, work, commitment and passion it takes to make this event possible. It takes a village to support these students and their dreams.

Thanks to this wonderful and giving village we call Manatee County who helped these students reach a dream. Everyone who has contributed to Take Stock in Children Manatee shares in these students' success.
