Giving Challenge fund-raising drive ends with more than $3.1 million in donations

The 2014 Giving Challenge, an online campaign to boost the fortunes of nonprofit organizations in Manatee, Sarasota, Charlotte and DeSoto counties, raised more than $3.1 million in donations.

As of noon Wednesday, when the 24-hour campaign ended, the Giving Challenge website had recorded 18,799 gifts worth a total of $3,127,801.

More than 400 organizations are participating in the fund-raising drive. Gifts can help them receive special grants and matching dollars from a pool of $675,000 in challenge funding from sponsoring foundations.

Receiving the most gifts -- 816, worth a total of $49,451 -- was Honor Animal Rescue, a Lakewood Ranch-based animal welfare organization.

Receiving the most money -- $73,960 from a total of 561 gifts -- was the Phelan McDermid Syndrome Foundation, a Venice-based organization offering support to those with the genetic disorder.

Close behind was the New College Foundation, with $73,000 from 404 gifts.
