MANATEE -- A child took his mother's unloaded handgun to his Bradenton elementary school Tuesday, according to the Manatee County Sheriff's Office.

The student, a fourth-grader at Orange Ridge-Bullock Elementary School, 400 30th Ave. W., took the .25-caliber pistol out of his mother's nightstand, then to school, according to a news release.

The child passed the gun to another fourth-grader, "who toted it around in his backpack for the majority of the day until it was seen by a third student who notified a teacher," the report states.

Both boys were detained in the front office, and detectives responded to continue the investigation, according to the report.
