May 17-18: The Project Appleseed rifle marksmanship clinic will be held on May 17-18 at the Manatee Gun and Archery Club, 1805 Logue Road, Myakka City. Registration begins at 8 a.m. The clinic starts at 8:30 a.m. and will continue until 5 p.m. both days. Participants are taught fundamental rifle marksmanship skills that are to allow a rifleman to be accurate out to 400 yards, with iron sights, a standard rifle and surplus ammunition. Most of the instruction at a Project Appleseed event is conducted on the firing range at 25 yards, at reduced size targets to simulate 100 to 400 yards. Students will learn safe gun handling, proper use of a rifle sling, and Revolutionary War history. Please bring your own ear/eye protection, a rifle with sling, ammunition, rifle mat, bug repellent, hat, sunscreen, a packed lunch, snacks, drinks and plenty of water. A .22-caliber rifle is recommended due to the cost of ammunition, but you can use a centerfire rifle if preferred. About 250 rounds of ammunition will be needed per day. Clinic fees are $40 for one day, $60 for both days for adults, $15/$20 for youth younger than 18 and free for active-duty military, law enforcement officers with identification and elected officials. Additional club range fees of $15 per day applies for all. To register online, go to For more info, contact Bruce Smith at 904-424-3855 or email

May 17: The Village Idiots Cycling Club (VICC), an official non-profit USA Cycling Club that serves as cycling advocates in the community and works to benefit local charities, will host the second annual Women on Wheels 100. The group ride event is for women only, free for all participants, and takes place on May 17, 2014, starting from Lakewood Ranch Main Street at 8 a.m. Any funds left over from sponsorship fees will add to the funds that VICC distributes at the end of the year to their designated charities. May is Women's Bike Month, and the VICC is holding the Women on Wheels ride to encourage more women to get involved in cycling. The ride is fully supported, with vehicles ready to attend cyclists in case of mechanical problems. The full route is 100 kilometers, equivalent to roughly 60 miles, but riders may take a 40-mile option. Rest stops with water, Gatorade, food and energy gels will be set up at the 20- and 40-mile points. Sponsors will be covering event-related expenses, so it is free to participate, but riders should be confident in their ability to ride such a distance. This ride is open to all adult women able to ride a minimum of 40 miles. Helmets are required, traffic laws must be obeyed at all times, and riders are required to sign an event waiver prior to start time. For more information, visit the VICC website at or register for the ride by May 12 via the Facebook event page at -events/261879387307281/.
