Patrols on lookout for Cinco de Mayo over-exuberance

MANATEE -- Cinco de Mayo has become synonymous with margaritas, tequila and beer -- and drunk driving, according to the Sarasota County Sheriff's Office.

Every 51 minutes, someone was killed in a drunk-driving crash in the United States in 2012, and 89 fatalities were around Cinco de Mayo. From 2011 to 2012, the number of people killed in DUI crashes on Cinco de Mayo reportedly more than doubled.

The Sarasota County Sheriff's Office will conduct saturation patrols Monday as part of a monthly initiative to remove dangerous drivers from local roads.

Suicidal call brings Manatee deputies April co-honor

MANATEE -- Deputies Keith Sutton and Christopher Ralston of the Manatee County Sheriff's Office have been named Co-Deputy of the Month for April, by Sheriff Brad Steube.

The pair answered a March 23 call for a suicidal young man who had armed himself with a knife and fled his residence saying he would be aggressive toward law enforcement officers and "the cops would have to shoot" him, Steube reported.

The duo found him still armed with a knife and after being hit by a Taser the young man was taken into custody, Steube reported.

"For their professional actions to resolve this incident, Deputies Keith Sutton and Christopher Ralston are awarded Deputy of the Month for April," Steube wote in a press release.
