State College of Florida Collegiate School graduation at a glance
Historic note: First commencement exercise for State College of Florida Collegiate School
Speakers: President Carol Probstfeld, State College of Florida; Hannah Cantolino and Olivia Roemer, 2014 State College of Florida Collegiate School graduate speakers.
Best quote: "Like circus performers, we were thrown into the ring. Our performance as the first-ever College School graduating class has set the standard. We did it. Here we are graduating from high school with two years of college. We will continue to live like the 'Greatest Show on Earth.'" Graduate Hannah Cantolino.
Shining moment: Counselor Angela Almeyda hilariously summed up the Collegiate School experience using acronyms. Said Almeyda: "You came to SCFCS (State College of Florida Collegiate School) to the ACP (Accelerated College Program) which is a DE (dual enrollment) program. You were told you needed a 3.0 GPA (grade point average) and PERT, SAT and ACT scores (all tests) in order to get in. You were told you would be working toward an AA degree (associate in arts degree). If you needed any help along the way, you could go to the ARC (Academic Resource Center). Many of you, of course, are going to FGCU (Florida Gulf Coast University) and will be receiving another two years of free tuition. Oops, I almost forgot to mention FAFSA (free application for federal student aid). I just want to say OMG."
Funny remark: When asked what surprised him the most being 17 on a college campus, graduate Ryan Murphy, a math whiz aiming toward a career in mechanical engineering replied, "Seeing people taking classes in their pajamas."
