Ethics panelclears schoolboard member
TALLAHASSEE -- The Florida Commission on Ethics met in closed session April 25 and dismissed an allegation against Robert Gause, Manatee County School Board member.
Gause allegedly failed to properly disclose his financial interests on his 2011 Form 6 disclosure form. The commission found no probable cause to believe he voted on measures that led to his private gain or loss, or to the private gain or loss of his employer or business associate.
New College student receives 2 national awards
SARASOTA -- New College of Florida student Abigail Oakes has won national recognition for devotion to the environment and her community.
She was one of 50 students nationwide awarded a Udall Scholarship for demonstrating a commitment to a career related to the environment. She also was named a national Newman Civic Fellow for service to the Sarasota-Manatee community.
Oakes is a third-year student in the natural sciences program.
She founded a campus chapter of Circle K International, partnering with a local Kiwanis chapter. The club drew 30 members, coordinated on food and book drives, volunteered with Miracle League Baseball, Brush Up Sarasota and the Senior Friendship Center, and tutored at Robert L. Taylor Community Center. They were named the strongest new club by the Florida District of CKI.
Oakes also served as a director of SailFuture, a nonprofit launched by New College students that uses sailing to help mentor at-risk youth.
Free pre-kindergarten programs in Manatee
MANATEE -- Five Manatee elementary schools will offer free voluntary pre-kindergarten programs June 12-Aug. 11: Bayshore, Daughtrey, Freedom, Palmetto and Rogers Garden.
The summer VPK program is for children 4 years old by Sept. 1, who are Florida residents not enrolled in VPK during the 2013-14 school year. Daily hours are 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday-Thursday. Breakfast and lunch are included free.
Parents can enroll their child May 5-9 by the following:
Go to the Early Learning Coalition, 600 Eighth Ave. W., Palmetto, to obtain a summer VPK certificate of eligibility. Bring a student birth certificate and proof of Florida residency. Information call 941-757-2900, ext.102.
Take the certificate of eligibility, birth certificate, immunization and a physical examination certificates to the Manatee District's Parent Information Center, 234 Manatee Ave. E., and complete a registration packet.
