Danger alert: Highways with higher speed limits in offing

April 26, 2014

Here's our quote of the week with come commentary.

A prediction: NASCAR racing will be coming to a highway near you soon.

Thi is about Senate Bill 392, which increases the speed limit on most interstates to 75 mph, passed by the chamber Thursday:

"Many of us are already driving at that level." -- state Sen. Jeff Brandes, R-St. Petersburg, sponsor of SB 392.

Speed limits also could jump by 5 miles per hour on roads where it's now 60 or 65 mph.

So if many motorists drive 5 mph or more over the speed limit, by Brandes' way of thinking, Florida will escalate that limit in the coming years to accommodate common practice.

That's a scary thought for highway safety.
