MANATEE -- Michael Boyer, chief financial officer for the Manatee County School District, has submitted his resignation, effective June 27, the school district announced Thursday.
"I never thought I would ever leave what is now positioned to be a very great school district, but when the opportunity arose to pursue a new opportunity, I simply had to take advantage of it," Boyer wrote in his resignation letter, which was included in a news release.
The letter did not say what his new job is.
Boyer started working for the school district April 23, 2012, under former Superintendent Tim McGonegal.
"We thank Michael for his two years of service to the Manatee District," said Deputy Superintendent of Operations Don Hall, who accepted the resignation on behalf of Superintendent Rick Mills.
Calls to Mills, Hall and Boyer were not returned Thursday.
Boyer was CFO when it was revealed in late summer 2012 that the district was running a multi-million-dollar budget deficit. McGonegal resigned, and Mills was hired in 2013 to right the district's fiscal ship.
"We are very confident that the Manatee District is heading in the right direction to return this district to a state of financial health and stability," Hall said in the news release. "We will make the necessary adjustments in light of Mr. Boyer's resignation and continue to build on the progress we have made so that we can ultimately reinvest in our students and employees."
Hall said the district will immediately begin the search for a new CFO. During the search, the district will consult with former school district CFOs to assist in closing out the books for the current school year and to finish the 2014-15 budget.
School board member Julie Aranibar said she is confident that the school district will be able to take on Boyer's responsibilities until a new CFO is hired.
"There are other people in the finance department that will fulfill his duties," she said.
Earlier this month, Rebecca Roberts was named finance director for the school district.
Hall said the district would name an interim CFO if necessary.
