Here's a brand-new subject for a comedy show: The difference between men and women. Never been done before, ever. Right?
Well, OK so there's probably no more common topic for comedy than differences between the sexes. But by all accounts, "Men Are From Mars -- Women Are from Venus Live!" is a really funny addition to the canon of comic shows that explore the gender gap.
Actor Peter Story, whom you may recognize from his roles on such diverse TV shows as "CSI," "Ugly Betty" and "Days of Our Lives," has been touring the country for the past year performing the one-man show. Today, he's bringing it to the Van Wezel Performing Arts Hall in Sarasota.
It's based, of course, on John Gray's pop-psychology book that became one of the best selling nonfiction books of the 1990s. But it's definitely an entertainment, not a seminar.
It's described as a fusion of theater and stand-up that provides an "interesting and witty glimpse into the complex psyches of men and women. "
It sounds an awful lot like Rob Becker's Broadway hit "Defending the Caveman." In fact, it sounds exactly like it. But Becker obviously didn't use up all of the comedic fodder on the subject matter. Reviews of the show indicate the both Martians and Venusians have been enjoying the show.
