Lawrence could not be reached for comment.

Lawrence, a former professional football player who began his career at the old Lincoln High in Palmetto and then at Manatee High as part of its first post-integration football team, announced last winter he would run against incumbent Rep. Vern Buchanan, R-Sarasota.

Democrat Mitch Mallett of Bradenton is also running.

Other challengers listed on the Florida Division of Elections website Wednesday included Joe Venuti and Daniel Durso, who have filed to run under "No Party Affiliation."

Sally Tibbetts, a spokeswoman for Buchanan, declined comment.

The candidates are vying to represent Florida's 16th Congressional District, which includes part of Manatee County and all of Sarasota County.
