Pentathlon World Cup trials bid to get boost

MANATEE -- Efforts to help land the Modern Pentathlon Olympic trials in 2016 may get a boost from Manatee County.

The Manatee County Tourism Development Council approved a recommendation Monday for a $150,000 contribution to continue a bid for the games. Sarasota County and Benderson Development Co. are also contributing $150,000 each to help.

The 2014 Modern Pentathlon World Cup Final will be hosted at the Sarasota Polo Club and Selby Aquatic Center in Sarasota, along with the World Cup Final in 2016 and a first-round event in 2015

The Manatee County Commission will have to approve the TDC's request.

Tourism council to give $175,000 for river race

BRADENTON -- A free F2 powerboat race and festival slated for February on the Manatee River will receive some county assistance.

The Manatee County Tourism Development Council approved a recommendation Monday for $175,000 to be spent on deposits and some advertising. Funds are paid by using bed taxes, which are paid when guests stay at hotels.

The recommendation will go to the Manatee County Commission for approval.

The money is basically shifting from one organization to another and back, said Elliott Falcione, executive director of the Bradenton Area Convention and Visitors Bureau. The event organizers, International Strategic Marketing USA, is contracting with the Bradenton Downtown Development Authority to provide some of the up-front funds, and the Bradenton DDA will be reimbursed from the TDC for the expenses, he said.

The free event is scheduled for Feb. 6-7 in Bradenton and Palmetto.

Premier Sports Campus seeks advertising dollars

MANATEE -- Premier Sports Campus in Lakewood Ranch is seeking $75,000 in tourism dollars from Manatee County to help sponsor upcoming lacrosse and soccer events.

The Manatee County Tourism Development Council approved a recommendation Monday for the sponsorship, which would help pay for bleachers, air-conditioned restrooms and other temporary amenities for Laxapaloo

za Lacrosse Tournament on May 24, Rippin' at the Ranch LB3 Lacrosse tournament on June 21-22 and Nike International Friendlies in December. The funds are subject to approval by the Manatee County Commissioners.

A capital buildout for permanent facilities is being planned in partnership with Schroeder Manatee Ranch, the master developer of Lakewood Ranch and owner of Premier Sports, said, Elliott Falcione, executive director of the Bradenton Area Convention and Visitors Bureau.
