SARASOTA -- A Sarasota woman was killed as she slept early Saturday when a Tampa woman fleeing police crashed into her house, according to Sarasota police.

Jakeilah R Weeks, 24, faces charges of vehicular homicide for the woman's death, police said.

About 3:30 a.m., officers responded to a report that Weeks had broken into the home of her ex-boyfriend, in the 1700 block of 29th Street, Sarasota.

"Upon arrival, officers were told a woman, who is a suspect in the burglary, had just entered a vehicle and they attempted to make contact with her as she sped away," a news release states.

Officers ran on foot so they could see where the car was going and witnessed Weeks crashing into a home in the 1700 block of 32nd Street, police said.

"The vehicle and driver went through a side wall of the home on 32nd Street and into a bedroom where a woman was sleeping," police said.

The woman inside the house, later identified as 62-year-old Eleanor Ball, was killed, police said.

Weeks was injured and taken to a local hospital. In addition to the homicide charge, Weeks faces charges of burglary, battery, theft and obstruction, in connection with the domestic incident, police said.

The incident happened near Booker High School.
