Manatee's unemployment rate unchanged

MANATEE -- Manatee's unemployment numbers are holding steady this year, while showing some improvement from 2013.

The latest jobs numbers released Friday by the Florida Department of Economic Opportunity show that Manatee County's March unemployment rate stood at 6.1 percent, the same as February's numbers, which are both non seasonally adjusted. The numbers are a one percentage point improvement from March 2013, when the rate stood at 7.1 percent.

Sarasota County's unemployment also remained unchanged at 6 percent in March.

The state's unemployment slightly increased for March at 6.4 percent, up from February's 6.3 percent mark. Year-over-year unemployment also dropped by a percentage point in the state, with March 2013 unemployment at 7.4 percent. National unemployment stands at 6.8 percent, down from 7.6 percent from last year.

The Bradenton-Sarasota-North Port metro area gained 8,700 jobs over the year, with trade, transportation and utilities leading the way with about 2,900 jobs and professional and business services with 2,000 jobs. The 5.8 percent gain in trade and transportation jobs in the Bradenton-Sarasota market was the second highest in the state for March, only lagging behind Tallahassee at 5.9 percent, ccording to CareerSource Suncoast, the region's job agency.

Government saw the largest loss of jobs in the metro area, at 200, according to CareerSource.
