A sun halo captured the attention of people across Manatee County on Wednesday, April 16, 2014. Here it is high in the sky at approximately 1pm, flanked on either side by the Manatee County Government parking garage and records building. The tower structure festooned with antennas and wiring is directly between the two buildings.

The halo around the sun over Bradenton on Wednesday is basically just a refraction in the light from the sun.
In very high, thin clouds, light tends to be bent by the ice crystals that make up the clouds. Within the crystals, the light is bent about a 22-degree angle, creating a halo around the sun.
